Removing or prorating a motor vehicle tax bill

TWO FORMS OF DOCUMENTATION ARE REQUIRED TO REMOVE OR PRORATE ANY MOTOR VEHICLE TAX BILL

The returned registration plate receipt from the Department of Motor Vehicles is mandatory for any adjustment you may be entitled to.

In addition to the plate receipt, any one of the following forms of documentation that may be applicable to your circumstance is acceptable:

A COPY OF THE BILL OF SALE

The bill of sale is located on the bottom of the owners registration form and the transfer information must be recorded on the back of the registration form before submitting this information to DMV. It is the seller’s obligation to provide a copy of the signed registration form to the Assessor’s Office.

LEASE TERMINATION AGREEMENT/ODOMETER DISCLOSURE STATEMENT

A copy of the lease termination/odometer disclosure which should include Year, Make, Model, Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer reading for the vehicle.

A COPY OF THE TRANSFER OF TITLE

A copy of both sides of the signed title showing the date when the transfer took place.

OUT OF STATE REGISTRATION OR REGISTRATION SHOWING A NEW NAME

A copy of the original out-of-state registration showing the date the vehicle was first re-registered.

If you sold the car to someone you know please obtain a copy of the registration showing the new owner.

STOLEN VEHICLE/TOTAL LOSS

A letter from your insurance company indicating that the vehicle was stolen and not recovered and/or a total loss from an accident. The owner must file for a lost or stolen plate receipt at the DMV.

JUNKED VEHICLE

A receipt from the junkyard with the year, make, model, & VIN and the date it was junked

TRADE-IN VEHICLE

A copy of the purchase agreement from the dealership identifying the trade-in vehicle and the date of the trade-in.

DONATED VEHICLE

A letter/receipt from the charity to which the vehicle was donated. The letter/receipt must include the year, make, model & VIN and the date it was donated.

PLEASE NOTE:

ALL INFORMATION MUST BE DATED AND HAVE THE YEAR,  MAKE, MODEL AND VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN) ON IT.
