The Conservation Department's mission is the environmental division of Westport town government.  Its goal is to protect, preserve and improve the town's natural resources.  The department administers the following town ordinances and regulations.

  • Wetlands and Watercourses Regulations (pdf)
  • Waterway Protection Line Ordinance - WPLO (pdf)
  • Aquifer Protection Regulations (pdf)
  • Tree Spraying Ordinance
  • Cockenoe Island Regulations (pdf)

    The department is the staff to the following commissions and committees.

  • Conservation Commission
  • Shellfish Commission
  • Sherwood Mill Pond Committee

    We also issue camping permits for Cockenoe Island and oversee its management. 

    We provide comments to other agencies and departments in their review of land use applications.  Various environmentally-related efforts are also organized throughout the year by the department.

    Permits for recreational shellfishing

    The Westport Shellfish Commission will be issuing permits for recreational shellfishing for the 2008 calendar year.  See this page for current information.
