The HDC office is located at Town Hall with a full-time CLG Coordinator/HDC Staff Administrator.

The HDC is a Certified Local Government agency (CLG) by partnership with the Town of Westport, the state and the federal government. It has the responsibility of overseeing four local historic districts:

  • Kings Highway North Historic District
  • Jesup Road Historic District
  • Violet Lane Historic District
  • Gorham Avenue Historic District

The HDC also oversees the National Register Districts, which are the National Hall and Compo/Owenoke. In addition, the Commission has a mandate, as a CLG, to be an advocate of historic preservation planning throughout Westport.

If a property is located in one of the designated local historic districts in Westport, all exterior renovations, additions, repairs, exterior changes to dwellings, fences, driveways or signs visible from the public right-of-way, or local roads, must receive a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission. Applications are heard in public meeting and granted by the Commission before work commences.

The Commission works to assist the district in maintaining its character and developing sympathetically as a community. To find out more about historic districts in Westport, check the links below:
