The Town Clerk’s office is where to file birth, death , marriage and civil union certificates. Burial and transit permits, cremation permits, and disinterment permits are also handled through the Clerk’s office. The office will make copies for families, the State of Connecticut and other towns. We do not share information with other states, nor do they share information with us.

You can now request and pay for copies of birth, marriage/civil union and death certficates online through our secure server.  The copies will be mailed to you.

Birth certificates

Certified copies of birth certificates can be issued for people who were born in Westport, or whose parents where residents of Westport at the time of the birth. To obtain a copy of a birth certificate by mail please use this application and send to us with the following:

  • Self-addressed stamped return envelope
  • $15.00 or $20.00 for each certified copy requested, depending on size of copy, as a check or money order payable to Town of Westport

Marriage or Civil Union Certificates

Certified copies of marriage or civil union licenses can be obtained for parties who were married/united in Westport, or for parties married/united within the State of Connecticut, that resided in Westport at the time of their marriage or civil union.

To obtain a certified copy of the either certificate by mail use the links below and also supply:

  • Self-addressed stamped return envelope
  • $20.00 per copy, check or money order payable to Town of Westport

Burial Permits

Burial permits are $3.00 and can be obtained in the Town Clerk's office.

Death Certificates

Certified copies of death certificates can be issued for people who have died in Westport, or who where residents of Westport at the time of death. To obtain a copy of a death certificate by mail, please use this application, and send with the following:

  • Self addressed stamped return envelope
  • $20.00 for each certified copy requested, as a check or money order payable to Town of Westport

Marriage or Civil Union License Requirements

A marriage or civil union license is required of any parties getting married or united in Westport. The cost is $30.00.

  • You must get your marriage or civil union license from the town in which you are getting married/united in or from the town in Connecticut where either party resides. (Proof of residency required)
  • A marriage or civil union license is valid for 65 days. (You must get married or united within 65 days of applying for your license.) 
  • Both parties must sign the marriage/civil union license and take an oath in the presence of the Town Clerk or Assistant Town Clerk. The parties may come in together or individually.  
  • The marriage or civil union license will be issued as soon as all of the necessary information has been furnished. Plan on spending about 20 minutes in the Town Clerk's Office. The office is in the Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, Room 105 and open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary.

Please apply for your marriage or civil union license by 4 p.m. so that there is no rush at the end of the day. Please fill out one of the two forms below, and bring it with you.  You will need to supply the following information.

  • Date of marriage or civil union, and location
  • The name, address, and telephone number of the person performing the ceremony for you
  • Your parent’s names (mother’s maiden name) and place of birth
  • $30.00 for the marriage/civil union license
  • Proof of residency
