PUBLIC WORKS FAQ’s

What are the hours at the transfer station on the Sherwood Island Connector? And the yard waste site at 180 Bayberry Lane?

The transfer station and yard waste site are open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays 7 a.m. to noon.

During the winter, the yard waste site winter hours  are:

  • Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

These hours are generally in effect from mid-January through mid-March when regular hours resume.

Is the transfer station open on holidays?

Both facilities are open on holidays with the exception of New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The yard waste facility has abbreviated weekly hours during the months of January, February, and March.

What can I throw out at the transfer station?

Westport residents are allowed to dispose of a variety of household items that includes furniture, carpeting, lamps, televisions and many other similar items. An area has been set aside for recycling household electronics.

Does it cost anything to dispose of items?

Typically, the only items that have a disposal cost are appliances (dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, etc.) and tires that have been removed from their rims. Fees are payable at Town Hall, Room 210.  Download a list of the disposal categories for various household goods.

How can I properly dispose of paints and other household chemical products that I no longer need?

The only chemical product that may be disposed of at the transfer station is latex paint. Other chemicals that require disposal may be brought to the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day that occurs in October.

What can I throw out at the yard waste site at 180 Bayberry Lane (behind Westport/Weston Health District building)?

Yard wastes resulting from typical yard maintenance activities such as clippings, trimmings, and leaves are accepted. Rocks and logs are not accepted.

What is the Tree Warden’s phone number?

341-1120

Who can I contact about plant growth/trees that block my view when attempting to pull into traffic at certain intersections?

Contact Public Works at 341-1120 to have sight line problems corrected.

How wide is the Town right-of-way along my street?

The width of the Town right of way is different for each street and can even vary along sections of the same street. You can usually find out further information about the right-of-way in the Planning and Zoning Office or on the original subdivision map, which is filed in the Town Clerk’s office.  Also, check the town's GIS system.

Is my street public or private?

You can find out by dowloading the current Street list  (pdf)  or reviewing it in the public works office. Or call 341-1120.

When will my road be repaved?

There is no set schedule for road repaving. However, each spring, town roads are evaluated for repaving based on the road conditions.

What are the different colored markings I see painted in the roadway at various locations?

These markings are the result of a statewide program called "Call Before You Dig" (CBYD). When a project is undertaken that involves any level of excavation, the project initiator contacts the CBYD office (800-922-4455) and provides all the details (when, where, purpose, etc.). The CBYD office puts all utility companies on notice regarding the project, requiring them to “mark out” where their utilities are located with respect to the proposed excavation. This alerts the company undertaking the excavation to the possible conflicts that may exist at the area intended to be excavated while also serving to protect the integrity of the various utility systems. Excavations may range from holes for fence posts to large scale digging for sewer construction.

Colors are assigned to utilities by type. They are:
Red – Electric
Yellow – Gas
Orange – Communications
Blue – Water
Green – Sewer
White– Proposed excavation

Is sewer available on my street?

Sewer service is available in many parts of town but as a rule is not available north of the Merritt Parkway (Route 15). Please contact Public Works at 341-1120 for specific location/address availability.

When will sewers be installed on my street?

The Town does not initiate sewer construction for areas not currently being served. New sewer construction is done in response to a petition (.pdf), which must have a majority of favorable signatures from the homeowners between the point where sewer exists to the point where sewer is wanted.

Now that sewer is available on my street, how do I connect?

After a new sewer line has been inspected by the town, instruction will be given on the steps necessary to connect. Basically it involves the individual resident getting prices from a licensed and bonded drainlayer followed by a simple permit process.

Can you recommend someone to connect my house to sewer?

A list of licensed and bonded drainlayers is available upon request in Room 210 at Town Hall.

Is this house connected to the sewer?

For inquiries involving sewer availability for a specific address, please contact Public Works at 341-1120.

How are my sewer bills calculated?

  • The Aquarion Water Company gives us the water meter readings for all properties that are connected to the town’s sewer system.
  • We use the winter and early spring quarters which best represent the actual amount that a given property will discharge to the sewer.
  • These two quarters of consumption are added to each other and then multiplied by two to estimate four quarters or a full year of flow.
  • This methodology minimizes any extraneous exterior water use (sprinklers, pools) follows the concept that “a gallon of flow in equals a gallon of flow out”.
