The transfer station and yard waste site are open Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays 7:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
During the winter, the yard waste site winter hours are:
- Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
These hours are generally in effect from mid-January through mid-March when regular hours resume.
Both facilities are open on holidays with the exception of New Years Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The yard waste facility has abbreviated weekly hours during the months of January, February, and March.
Westport residents are allowed to dispose of a variety of household items that includes furniture, carpeting, lamps, televisions and many other similar items.
Typically, the only items that have a disposal cost are appliances (dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, etc.) and tires that have been removed from their rims
The only chemical product that may be disposed of at the transfer station is latex paint. Other chemicals that require disposal may be brought to the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day that occurs in October.
Yard wastes resulting from typical yard maintenance activities such as clippings, trimmings, and leaves are accepted. Rocks and logs are not accepted.

The width of the Town right of way is different for each street and can even vary along sections of the same street. You can usually find out further information about the right-of-way in the Planning and Zoning Office or on the original subdivision map, which is filed in the Town Clerk’s office.
You can find out by checking the Street Listing list in the Public Works office. Or call 341-1120.
There is no set schedule for road repaving. However, each spring, Town roads are evaluated for repaving based on the road conditions.
These markings are the result of a statewide program called "Call Before You Dig" (CBYD). When a project is undertaken that involves any level of excavation, the project initiator contacts the CBYD office (800-922-4455) and provides all the details (when, where, purpose, etc.). The CBYD office puts all utility companies on notice regarding the project, requiring them to “mark out” where their utilities are located with respect to the proposed excavation. This alerts the company undertaking the excavation to the possible conflicts that may exist at the area intended to be excavated while also serving to protect the integrity of the various utility systems. Excavations may range from holes for fence posts to large scale digging for sewer construction.
Colors are assigned to utilities by type. They are:
Red – Electric
Yellow – Gas
Orange – Communications
Blue – Water
Green – Sewer
White– Proposed excavation

Sewer service is available in many parts of Town but as a rule is not available north of the Merritt Parkway (Route 15). Please contact Public Works at 341-1120 for specific location/address availability.
The Town does not initiate sewer construction for areas not currently being served. New sewer construction is done in response to a petition (.pdf), which must have a majority of favorable signatures from the homeowners between the point where sewer exists to the point where sewer is wanted.
After a new sewer line has been inspected by the Town, instruction will be given on the steps necessary to connect. Basically it involves the individual resident getting prices from a licensed and bonded drainlayer followed by a simple permit process.
A list of licensed and bonded drainlayers is available upon request in Room 210 at Town Hall.
For inquiries involving sewer availability for a specific address, please contact Public Works at 341-1120.
