Postal regulations require customers to provide and erect, at their own expense, rural mailboxes which meet official standards. Please help your carrier provide you with better service by maintaining your mailbox in accordance with the following criteria:
- Both the mailbox and supporting post must be neat and of adequate strength and size.
- Installations must be designed to withstand the conditions of New England Winters.
- The street address must be installed upon the box in numerals not less than 1" high.
- The face of the mailbox shall be between 8" to 10" from either the edge of pavement, gutter line or the face of curbing.
- Mailboxes must be placed in conformance with state and local laws and highway regulations. Whereas most mailboxes are installed within the right-of-way limits of the adjoining roadway, their placement is at the discretion of the roadway owners/s.
- The responsibility for the maintenance of the mailboxes installed within the right-of-way limits the roadways owned by the Town of Westport shall rest solely with the owner of the mailbox.
- The Town of Westport shall not be responsible for the repair or replacement of mailboxes damaged during Town maintenance or snow removal operations.
