Department of Public Works Mission Statement

The Department of Public Works provides routine and scheduled maintenance functions to the town's infrastructure. Capital replacement is projected, budgeted, and completed when needed. Individual systems (roadway, drainage, sidewalks, etc.) are reviewed to identify and prioritize various maintenance strategies. Information is managed to determine the appropriate alternatives for maintain existing levels of service.

Transportation

  • Maintain roadways, sidewalks, and bike paths in a safe, serviceable condition.
     
  • Annually inspect all town-owned roadways in order to prioritize effectiveness of maintenance budget expenditures.
     
  • Investigate changes in technology to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance budget expenditures.

Drainage

  • Maintain town buildings to provide a safe workspace for the community.
     
  • Maintenance reviews and initiatives in order to prioritize effectiveness of maintenance budget expenditures.
     
  • Maintain existing facilities to provide maximum potential for future expansion/reduction of service.
     
  • Review changing federal, state, or local building, environmental, or workplace safety regulations to anticipate and plan for costly or untimely mandated modifications.

Services

  • Maintain adequate facilities to meet the needs of the community in a cost-effective, efficient, and legally responsible manner.
     
  • Provide for the cost-effective disposal of municipal and privately generated solid waste and yard waste with minimal impact to neighborhood groups or environment.

Maintenance of the Westport Water Pollution Control Facility

  • Maintain in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.
     
  • Review changes in technology to optimize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
     
  • Retain appropriate professional services to advise the town decision-makers.

Emergency Response Capability

  • Maintain a staff of appropriately equipped and trained employees capable of responding during emergency situations typically related to severe weather conditions.
     
  • Provide emergency response capability to maintain or restore transportation functions under any emergency condition.
     
  • Coordinate with uniform services to provide safety and service to the community during and following an emergency event.
