The original aims of the Arts Advisory Council were established in 1994 by its late chairman Burt Chernow. The members are appointed by the First Selectman, and serve two year terms.

The mission of this council is:

• To find ways to increase public awareness of Westport artists past and present and their contributions in the field of drama, literature, music and the visual arts.
• To act as facilitator and/or advocate for the arts.
• To study ways in which the town can serve community artists and art groups.
• To preserve our artistic past so that it can be enjoyed by present and future generations of Westporters.
