The Westport Transit District Board was organized under Connecticut's Municipal Transit Act in 1974. In 1992, the Board engaged the Norwalk Transit District as manager of Westport's public transportation system.

The system provides commuter, daytime, and after-school transportation as well as door-to-door service for the elderly and such services for the disabled and are consistent with state and federal guidelines.
