Back to School Program runs Aug. 11-15; donations requested

Westport’s annual “Back to School Program” involving distribution of new backpacks, school supplies and shoe vouchers to income-eligible families with children in Westport will run from Monday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 15, Barbara Butler, director of the Westport Department of Human Services, has announced.

“The Back to School program depends solely upon the generosity of community individuals and organizations,” said Butler.

Last year, 166 children from 94 eligible families received back to school supplies as well as Payless Shoe vouchers for a new pair of school shoes.

Butler said, “Donations at any level are greatly appreciated.”

The Department of Human Services also accepts tax-deductible monetary donations made payable to “Families in Need Fund” (memo: Backpacks) and mailed to Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.

Donations of new school supplies of all types, including backpacks, may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 200 at Westport Town Hall.

Families who may qualify for this program are urged to contact the Department of Human Services. If you have any questions regarding this program, call Margaret Pinheiro at (203)341-1050.
