Planning & Zoning Director Laurence Bradley has announced that effective Sept. 28 the Planning and Zoning Commission has instructed the Planning & Zoning Department to temporarily suspend enforcement of the outdoor storage and display regulations regarding outdoor eating areas.
“The commission chose to act now given the current economically challenging times for town merchants and restaurants,” said Bradley.
In addition, as part of the commission’s efforts, early next year before the outdoor eating season begins, they will also be reviewing a text amendment that will simplify and streamline the procedures for merchants to obtain approvals for outdoor eating areas in the future. Further, the commission will consider streamlining the procedures regarding outdoor events in general.
The commission, at a work session held on Sept. 17, 2009, adopted the following resolution:
“Resolved, in light of the current uniquely adverse economic conditions facing Westport merchants in particular restaurants and retail food establishments, effective immediately and until January 31, 2010, the Planning & Zoning Commission instructs the Planning & Zoning Director to not enforce Section 32-6 (Outdoor Storage and Display) of the Westport Zoning Regulations only insofar as to allow restaurants, fast food restaurants and retail food establishments to have outdoor eating areas.”
All other sections of the Zoning Regulations remain in effect.
This resolution shall take effect immediately.
