Each of the two major political parties — Republican and Democratic — is represented by a Registrar of Voters. Either Registrar (or Assistant Registrar) can register and enroll new voters regardless of party affiliation.

In addition to registering new voters, the Registrars are deeply involved in every election, primary, or referendum to ensure that voting machines are programmed and polling places are properly set up and staffed. They also send notices to all registered households informing them of the hours, dates, and locations of upcoming elections.

Voters may choose not to affiliate with any political party. However, only those enrolled in a political party may vote in a primary held by that political party. Enrolling in a party does not commit the voter's choice in a regular, general election. Connecticut State law dictates a three-month period as a voter registered in a party to switch from one party to another.

Although the two Registrars serve the Town of Westport, their work is governed by state statute and federal election law.

The most recent and comprehensive legislation which governs the way this office operates is the National Voter Registration Act which went into effect January 1, 1995. This act also lets new residents become voters when they register their cars or obtain/renew a driver's license.

Registration Requirements
Any U.S. citizen who is 18 years old or older and who is a bona fide resident of this town is eligible to register to vote in this town. (A bona fide resident is one whose fixed home is in the town in which they apply and to which home or town they intend to return when they are temporarily absent.)

High School students who are 17 years old may register so long as they will reach their 18th birthday by the November election day of the same calendar year.

It is necessary to show a proper ID to register and to vote at the polls. Proper ID for registration should show name and Westport address (e.g. utility bill, driver's license, check, library card). Proper ID for voting should show name. A Social Security Card is acceptable for either circumstance.
