The Westport Representative Town Meeting (RTM) today announced the opening of a search for one of its Transit District Directors to serve a new four-year term. The RTM is seeking a strategic, experienced, and community-focused leader to guide Westport Transit District through its next phase of service excellence and operational innovation.
The Transit District Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of transit operations, including daily service, budgeting and financial oversight, marketing, and coordination with regional transportation partners. The position plays a central role in maintaining reliable service while advancing long-term mobility goals for residents, commuters, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
“Our transit system is an essential part of Westport’s infrastructure and quality of life. Further, it supports the town’s broader goals of sustainability, accessibility, and economic vitality,” said Melissa Levy, Chair of the RTM Transit Committee. “The next Director will help shape the future of mobility in our town. We are looking for a forward-thinking leader who brings operational expertise, fiscal responsibility, and a strong commitment to public service.”
The current Westport Transit District Co-Directors, Peter Gold and Karina Betfarhad, have demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication to the community, improving service reliability, advancing fleet modernization, and enhancing rider communication. They serve staggered 4-year terms in order to provide continuity to the role. Only one position is being filled at this time.
In the upcoming term, the Transit District Director will be expected to:
- Maintain safe and dependable daily operations
- Strengthen financial management and long-term planning
- Pursue state and federal funding opportunities
- Enhance community engagement and rider experience
- Advance sustainability and environmental initiatives
The RTM will conduct a comprehensive recruitment process to identify qualified candidates with demonstrated leadership. Background in strategic planning, budgeting, and regulatory compliance is highly desirable. Eligible candidates must be registered voters in Westport.
Applications will be accepted through March 2026. The new four-year term will begin in May 2026.
Interested candidates for this volunteer position should email a resume and/or statement of interest, including contact information, to Melissa Levy at mlevy@westportct.gov.
