Oysters are beneficial for many reasons, both as a nutritious food and for the role they play in the environment.

Oysters are natural filters

They eat by filtering out nutrients from the water, and in turn this improves the water quality by balancing the nutrient levels within the water. They can help prevent harmful algal blooms from forming, as they eat algae as one of their food sources.

Natural barriers

Oyster beds can act as natural barriers against erosion and fortify nearby wetlands (NOAA Fisheries, 2022).

Habitat for others

Oyster beds provide a unique habitat that other species utilize. Crabs and smaller fish use the oyster bed as protection from larger predators. For those larger predators, like us humans, oyster beds provide a good space for foraging because they draw in such a variety of species.
