The Sherwood Mill Pond is an 83-acre tidal pond that plays an important ecological and recreational role in the community. It represents just over 1% of the town’s total land area and supports a variety of wildlife, including more than 70 species of birds. The pond is used for recreation, environmental education, and passive enjoyment of its natural setting.
In 2004, the Sherwood Mill Pond Advisory Committee was appointed by First Selectwoman Diane Goss Farrell. The Committee serves in an advisory capacity to the town’s land use boards and commissions, offering input on matters affecting the pond and its surrounding area.
The pond is considered an important natural feature, valued for both its ecological function and scenic character. It continues to serve as a space where residents can observe nature, engage in outdoor activities, and learn about the coastal environment.
