Website Redevelopment Steering Committee
Mission Statement and Charge

The Town of Westport is pursuing a redevelopment of the town website which has been in use since 2011. Since that time, there have been major changes in technology with mobile usage having seen a tremendous increase. The new website must meet today’s needs for responsive design across devices, incorporate more functionality related to Town services and improve the “ease of use” that citizens have experienced and come to expect through visits to other commercial and some public websites.

This is a major undertaking for Westport’s Office of Information Technology, which will involve redesign, development, and external hosting of the new town website. To this end, the town has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to select and contract with a company (vendor) to design and implement a new website that is modern, highly attractive and in conformance with the latest standards.

To assist in the successful accomplishment of this project, the First Selectman has assembled a town Website Redevelopment Steering Committee (the Committee) that will participate in the process and offer guidance and oversight from vendor selection through website implementation and roll out. The Committee consists of a group of highly experienced internal and external Information Technology professionals along with representatives of major town user departments and the RTM’s IT committee. The members of the Committee are listed below.

The Town is seeking proposals from highly qualified, experienced website development companies to design, develop and implement its public-facing website. The Committee will assist the Town in selecting a vendor who will serve as a strategic partner moving forward. The Committee will be evaluating proposals to select a firm that has experience in cost effectively managing local government website design projects and expertise with best practices regarding:

• Successful website redesign
• Information architecture
• Website development and deployment
• Website hosting
• Social media integration
• Search engine optimization
• Responsive design
• Security
• User support

The town’s IT Director will manage the project and report on an ongoing and regular basis to the Committee with regard to schedule, progress, and issues. The Committee will provide guidance, direction, and assistance to the IT Director with key project development decisions as needed and serve as an ongoing resource throughout the project implementation. The Committee will update the First Selectman on an as needed or requested basis with regard to its perception of the progress of the project and any topics that warrant discussion.
