Veteran’s Exemption (No proof of income required)

A Veteran is described as a person who has served in the armed forces. To be eligible for this exemption a Veteran must have served during an active period of war for at least 90 days, received an honorable discharge and have his/her discharge file with the Town Clerk prior to Oct. 1. Download War Dates file to check "active periods of war." [PDF]

Note: If you are entitled to a disability pension as determined by the Veteran’s Administration whether you served during an active period of war or not, you are eligible for a disabled Veteran’s Exemption. You must file your percentage of disability rating (Form 20 5444) every October with the Assessor.

Disabled Veterans

Veterans with a disability rating of at least 10% may submit the award letter from the Veterans Administration to the Assessor's Office for an increase exemption.

NEW-Veterans with 100% Service Connected Permanent & Total Disability Rating

Effective October 1, 2024 Grand List and reflected in the July 1, 2025 tax bill

Veterans who have served in the armed forces with a 100% service connected permanent and total disability rating my receive a full exemption on either (1) the dwelling they own and live in as their primary residence or, (2) if the veteran does not own a dwelling, one motor vehicle he or she owns and keeps in this state.

Additional State Veteran’s Exemption - Income Requirement

Any Veteran who is eligible for the Veteran’s exemption previously mentioned, and whose adjusted gross income meets certain guidelines, is eligible for twice the regular exemption which would be applied to your assessment. Application dates for this program are Feb. 1 through Oct 1. For the Oct. 1, 2023 Grand List, income requirements are as follows:

Single Veteran:       $43,800
Married Veteran:     $53,400

The above includes all income, non taxable and taxable.

Totally disabled Veterans do not include Social Security in the income. 

Town of Westport Additional Veteran’s Exemption

The Town of Westport also offers a local option for an additional $20,000 off of your assessment. Application dates for this program are Feb. 1 through Oct 1. For the Oct. 1, 2023 Grand List, income requirements are as follows:

Single Veteran           $68,800 maximum income
Married Veteran         $78,400 maximum income

In–Service Exemption

A member of the armed forces who is currently on active duty may be eligible to have one passenger motor vehicle garaged inside or outside the state exempt from property tax. To qualify, the individual must submit a form annually confirming “on active duty” by signing the attestation statement. Download and print out an application.[PDF]
