What Is Home Deconstruction?

Home deconstruction is the careful dismantling of a structure so building materials can be reused, recycled, or repurposed—rather than demolished and sent to landfills. This environmentally friendly alternative reduces waste, lowers disposal costs, and supports sustainable building practices.

Why Westport Supports Deconstruction

The Town of Westport Conservation Department encourages deconstruction because it:

✔ Reduces Waste

Up to 90% of materials—including lumber, flooring, fixtures, and architectural details—can be recovered instead of discarded.

✔ Protects Local Natural Resources

Reusing materials reduces the need for new resource extraction, helping preserve forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats.

✔ Lowers Disposal Costs

Deconstruction can reduce or eliminate tipping fees and landfill charges, which benefits both homeowners and contractors.

✔ Supports Local Reuse Organizations

Salvaged materials may be donated to regional reuse centers or nonprofits.
