Before you begin demolition of a structure in Westport, you must ensure compliance with both the town’s building permit requirements and conservation/wetlands regulations.

The Conservation Department reviews demolitions especially when they are located near regulated wetlands, watercourses, or within the Waterway Protection Line (WPL) area.

When is a Demolition Permit Required?

You need to apply for a demolition permit when:

  • You plan to raze, remove, or substantially dismantle a building or structure on your property.

  • The site is near or within a regulated wetland, watercourse, or WPL boundary, or your activities will disturb those buffer areas.

Important Considerations & Tips

  • Deconstruction instead of Demolition: Consider salvaging reusable materials to reduce landfill waste and promote sustainability. The Department encourages deconstruction where feasible. (See our Deconstruction Page)
  • Wetland setbacks & WPL: Even if you are demolishing a structure, the removal may trigger wetland or Waterway Protection Line review if near regulated features. Early consultation is advisable. (See our WPLO & IWW Setbacks)
  • Start early and coordinate: Reach out to Conservation staff before engaging contractors to identify required paperwork and buffer issues. Delays happen when wetlands or other regulated areas are overlooked.
