Donations Provide Reliable Summer Child Care - a Lifeline for Working Families

Westport Human Services Director Elaine Daignault is calling on the community to support the Department’s vital Family-to-Family seasonal fundraising efforts. These programs provide income-eligible Westport families with access to summer camps and help children celebrate important life milestones—opportunities that can be out of reach during financially challenging times.

“In today’s economic climate, affordable childcare—especially in the summer—is more than a convenience. It’s a necessity,” said Daignault. “Summer camp programs ensure children have access to safe, enriching experiences while allowing parents to maintain employment and financial stability.”

The Campership Program addresses the growing demand for summer childcare and enrichment. With the cost of day camps averaging $5,000 per child for a full 12-week season, many local families are unable to afford this essential care.

“Camp offers so much more than supervision,” said Youth & Family Specialist Annette D’Augelli. “It gives kids the chance to form friendships, build confidence, and create cherished memories in a supportive, structured environment. For parents—especially single-parent households—reliable, affordable care during summer break makes it possible to keep their jobs and put food on the table.”

The Ceremonies & Celebrations Fund also plays a meaningful role in supporting Westport youth. The program provides gift cards to income-eligible 8th and 12th grade graduates, allowing families to mark these important achievements with pride. Donations may help purchase a graduation outfit, cover the cost of a celebratory meal, or simply allow families to honor their children’s hard work and milestones with dignity.

“Children work hard to reach these moments, and many parents make great sacrifices to support them,” said Daignault. “We want every child to feel seen, celebrated, and supported—regardless of their financial circumstances.”

The average cost of summer camp ranges from:

  • $5,000 = Full 12 weeks of camp
  • $2,500 = 6 weeks of camp
  • $1,000 = 2.5 weeks of camp
  • $400 = One full week of camp
  • $200 = Half a week of camp or a family meal at graduation
  • $100 = 25% of a week or a graduation/prom outfit

All contributions go directly to support income-eligible Westport children and families. Your donations, regardless of amount, provides stability, joy, and opportunity for a local child and their family to create lasting memories.
