Course Overview

This course is offered through Westport Parks & Recreation and is administered by certified American Red Cross instructors. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding – Deep Water course trains participants to recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in a pool environment. This certification prepares lifeguards with the skills to prevent, respond to, and provide care for aquatic and medical emergencies until advanced medical personnel arrive.

Successful completion results in an American Red Cross certification in:

• Lifeguarding (Deep Water)
• CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
• First Aid

Prerequisites
Participants must:

• Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session.
• Successfully complete a prerequisite swim assessment on the first day of the course.
• On the first day of class, participants must bring a valid photo ID and the completed confirmation email of blended portion from the Red Cross showing completion of the online portion in order to continue to the in-person skills session.
• Participants who do not complete the online portion or fail the pre-requisite swim assessment will not move on to the in skills portion of the class.

Prerequisite Swim Assessment Includes:

• Swim 150 yards continuously, using front crawl and breaststroke, no backstroke or sidestroke
• Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs.
• Swim 50 more yards.
• Swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-lb object, surface, and return to the starting point with both hands holding the object within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Goggles are not allowed for this event.

Course Requirements:

Please ensure that the participant's personal email address is entered accurately during registration. American Red Cross certifications are issued and linked to the email address provided. Each certification can only be associated with one email address and using an incorrect email or an email that does not belong to the participant may create difficulties when accessing, renewing, or verifying certifications in the future. The name and email address provided at registration should match the individual receiving the certification.

Participants will receive an email a week before the class with access to the online blended portion. This email will be sent by “Salesforce Automation Account rclcsfteam@redcross.org” and may appear in the inbox or the spam/junk folder.

Reminders:

• Participants who do not complete the online portion will not be admitted to the skills session.
• There are no refunds for participants who have not completed the online portion.
• No refunds will be issued to participants who do not pass the prerequisite swim assessment.

• 5:30pm-9:30pm Prerequisite assessment + Classroom Learning

Saturday Schedule:

• 8:00am-12:00pm Classroom Learning
• 1:00-6:00pm In-water skill session (Participants will be given a break for lunch)

Sunday Schedule:

• 8:00am-12:00pm Classroom Learning
• 1:00-6:00pm In-water skill session (Participants will be given a break for lunch)
