For administrative purposes, the Westport Police Department is comprised of different divisions. Most of the day-to-day work done by the department falls within two divisions, which are further divided into sub-divisions. In reality, like most smaller police department, most members of the department work across divisions.

There are two divisions within the department - Operations and Professional Standards - each commanded by a Captain. 

Most of the law enforcement function is provided by officers assigned to the Operations Division, whether in patrol or investigations. The Professional Standards Division handles most of the logistical and support functions for the department. The Information Management Section, part of Professional Standards, includes records administration, IT and scheduling.  Also under the Professional Standards Division umbrella are public affairs, training, and internal affairs.
