Traffic Safety Unit

The Westport Police Department is committed to making the streets of Westport safe for all people who travel on our roads every day by combating distracted driving and speeding, as well as all other traffic violations. The Traffic Unit was created in May 2007 and acts on complaints from residents. The unit's goal is to reduce accidents, enhance road safety, and increase driver compliance with motor vehicle laws, while also addressing citizen complaints.

There are 332 roads in Westport designated as town roads with a total combined length of approximately 123 miles. The town roads within Westport are public streets and are maintained by the town.

By law, the Town of Westport must comply with the standards, guidance, and options of the National Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.

Traffic Safety Concerns & Enforcement Requests

Although every effort is made to identify problem areas and respond proactively, we also rely on the assistance and cooperation of our community members to keep our roadways safe. We encourage residents to report any issues or concerns.

Citizens who would like to request Traffic Enforcement in their neighborhood may submit a request through the Town of Westport's Police Department request submission. The Traffic Enforcement Unit will review the request and determine the best action to take to meet your concerns. Residents can place a request for selective speed enforcement by submitting a Traffic Enforcement request.

In addition to enforcement requests, the Westport Police Department encourages residents to contact us with more information about other traffic safety concerns, such as roadway design, sign placement, and safety improvements. An online Traffic & Pedestrian Safety Report, as well as information on submitting a request/inquiry, can be found here.
