 Pistol Permit Renewal Information

Announcement from the State of Connecticut for New Pistol Permit Applicants Only*:
(*Pistol permit renewals are processed by the Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection (DESPP).

Pistol permit applications may be picked up at the Westport Police Department or downloaded from our website. You must obtain a local pistol permit before applying for a state permit. In addition to completing all forms, you must complete a handgun safety course, which must consist of no less than the NRA's "Basic Pistol Course," before submitting the application. The NRA's "Home Firearms Safety Course" and "First Steps Pistol Orientation Program" are not approved courses. 

Live fire is also required. Computer-generated programs, dry-fire, other simulated shooting tools, plastic bullets, air guns, or any other alternatives are not acceptable. Students must fire a semi-automatic pistol or revolver.

When applying for a State of Connecticut Pistol Permit in the Town of Westport, the following is required:

1. You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application submission and a Town of Westport Resident. (Proof is required)

2. Completed and NOTARIZED State of Connecticut Pistol Permit/Eligibility Certificate Application DPS-799-C (current form Rev: 03/03/21 will only be accepted).

3. Bank Certified check or Money Order. All checks MUST be a bank certified check, Money Order, or Postal Money Order made payable to the Town of Westport for $70.00.

4. Two forms of identification: Please make a PHOTOCOPY of your Birth Certificate OR your valid US Passport AND a valid Operator’s License OR Government ID. (Legal resident, Alien Registration Card, VISA, I-94).

5. Your original certificate from an approved firearms safety course. DESPP Approved Pistol Safety Course with Live Fire. (NRA Basic Pistol or Approved)

6. You must sign and date the attached “FBI Privacy Act Statement” and “Noncriminal Justice Applicant’s Privacy Rights” forms included in the Pistol Permit Application. Please submit them with your application. 

7. Please drop off the completed, notarized application and privacy rights form, along with your money order or bank check in the amount of $70.00, in an envelope addressed to Detective Lauria. After the documents have been reviewed, the applicant will be contacted to schedule an appointment and provided the service code to the CCHRS FlexCheck System.

At the time of your appointment there will be a $10.00 Fingerprint Fee paid in cash only at the records window.  

Please hydrate your hands with lotion for one week before your appointment.

Please do not call for updates on your permit. The State and the FBI do not update this Department on your pistol permit. Processing could take over 3 months.

Long Gun Eligibility Certificates and Ammunition Certificates

The Westport Police Department does not accept applications for these certificates or issue them. They are obtained through the CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection. For more information and available online forms click here.
